VOILÀ ! - Creation process

(with red carpet and vacuum cleaner)

"VOILÀ !" was developed over the course of a year. The impetus for the project came in 2004 when the Festival d’Avignon gave Olza carte blanche to create a special evening for the "La vingt-cinquième heure" series in the Salle Benoît XII. This performance series supplemented the festival’s programme with an opportunity for artists to try out new and innovative performance material. Olza’s performance piece was entitled "Contact" and as its name suggests, it was based on the concept of contact between performer and audience. This unique experience gave him a kick-start for the whole project which was done in collaboration with the choreographer and actress Carlotta Sagna. Afterwards he returned to Basel and began working alone in his studio, trying out various crazy ideas to see where they would lead. One experiment involved working with the ancient concept of paper folding - origami - but on a much larger scale! During his investigations he found a way to fold a 16 kg carpet so that it could balance on his back or on the sole of his foot. The next phase in the piece’s development was done in collaboration with the choreographer Zoltán Dani working as an "oeil exterieur", and gave rise to the project’ s name "VOILÀ!". During a later rehearsal period in Brussels the project received a new important impulse from the artist Robert Suermondt. This led to a public performance in Spring 2005 as an open try-out at the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin/Paris. Further try-outs took place in Lucerne at the Theater La Fourmi, at the Festival de la Cité in Lausanne and in Neuchâtel at the Festival Scène-ouverte. The final phase of the process resulted in a premiere in Basel, accompanied again by Jordy Haderek as an "oeil extérieur".
