TWO MEN AND A CELLO 1999 - 2001

Press

PLZENSKY DENIK 4.8.2001 (Deniky Bohemia: A classical setting is of secondary
importance to the Swiss actor with a penchant for unusual theatre venues)

(...) The actor Philippe Olza is no unknown quantity for Czech audiences. He is familiar, both from Vladimir Javorsky's film, from several theatre plays directed by Ctibor Turba and of course from the production Madame Monsieur for Prague, European Cultural Capital 2000. In his most recent production, Two Men and a Cello he succeeds in uniting music, song, dance and theatre and the idiosyncrasies of the French and German traditions. This performance reflects not only our fantasies but also real events from everyday life and people we have encountered.

CORRIERE DEL TICINO 29.9.1999 (Fabrizio Coli: Dance and music in time and space)

(...) "Two men and a cello" emerged from Olza’s travels through Europe and will be performed for the first time in Locarno. The performance - in common with other projects by Olza - is adapted to take account of the particularities of each performance venue. The versatility of this touring production is, of course, equally evident in the set design which is also adapted for each venue.

OSTSEEZEITUNG WISMAR 14.12.2000 (I. S.: Performance in the OZ foyer)

(...) Matthias Hermann Ibach and Philippe Olza are the centrepoint of this performance featuring two barefoot men, a chair and a cello. The evening flew by in a dream of music, dance and theatre. The playful, musical and dancing presence of the two men filled up the evening with a dreamlike atmosphere and became a bridge of understanding.

FRÄNKISCHER TAG 7.10.1999 (Bamberg: Two men and a cello)

(...) Two men travelling together meet a host of different characters, for example Mariko from Wuppertal, now residing in the Rue Fauvet in Paris. Amelie, who lives in a circus wagon, works as a hospital clown and barbeques with the two men. For a while the two live with Petra in Schlesslitz… Hermann’s typical song repertoire combines with Olza’s dance and is complemented by joint compositions, texts, movement and performance. The result of the two men’s experiences on the road : a 64 minute space-time performance.

DANZA & DANZA MILANO May 2001 (Carmela Piccione: A choreography by Béjart artist Philippe Olza on tour)

(...) Philippe Olza now works on specific projects with a view to collaborating with a variety of artistic personalities. Last summer in Castiglioncello he presented one of his most recent touring projects in the gardens of the Castello Pasquini in cooperation with the young German musician and composer Matthias Hermann Ibach. German Lieder alternate with opera and with revue, interwoven with words, nonsense, quotations, everyday gags, poetry and song.
