TWO MEN AND A CELLO 1999 - 2001


Matthias Hermann Ibach



Has been playing cello since he was six years old. Since 1979 he has been a pupil of Daniel Cahen (Wuppertal Conservatory). His initial studies in sculpture were followed by training and performance as a clown with Philippe Gaulier (Paris, London), Pierre Byland (Locarno) and Martine Burer (Geneva). 1992 saw the development of his solo piece "Cellohermann", with which he toured extensively in Europe receiving first prize at the Feldkirch Festival in Austria. A meeting with the Belgian choreographer Philippe Lizon led to his collaboration with the Compagnie Buissonnière (Lausanne), on their dance performance "Les Buveurs de brouillard". A European tour followed with performances in St. Petersburg and at the Berner Tanz Tage Festival, to name but a few. In addition he has participated in the following productions as composer, actor and musician: "Mordpass" by Madame Bisseger and Cie. (CH), "Trio B", with Pierre Byland and Simon Beyerler (CH), Grimms "Hänsel und Gretel" (D), "The Master and Margarita", by Michail BulgakovI (D). Commencing in 1995 he has collaborated with the painter and sculptor Petra Peschkes on various performance projects. He has recorded two CDs: "Hermann" (Vocals and cello) and "Unerhört" (German Folksongs, Arrangemments and vocals). He founded several music ensembles: the folk trio Le Tir-jus (Prix de l’originalité at the Neuchâtel Festival (CH), the rock groups Bunkerbeat (Ticino Rock Prize, Riazzino (CH) and Flugfisch. Since 1995 he has also been a member of the tango group Café Deseado St. Gallen (CH). His artistic collaboration with Philippe Olza commences in 1999. His meeting with the American pianist John Carlson in Wismar (D) in 2000 leads to the performance of Ibach's programme "Hermannsplatz". In 2002 he interprets the 24 Lieder of Schubert’s that he transcribed in his musical universe. He is now living and working in South-Italy.
